About
Our Methodist Church buildings in Briggswath have been open for nearly 115 years. Presently we are a group of between 25 - 30 people who meet here regularly on Sunday morning for worship.
We are part of a 'Hub' with four other Methodist churches in the Whitby area - Flyingthorpe, Hawsker, Littlebeck, and Robin Hood's Bay - sharing various regular events and other activities for mission, outreach, and to grow our discipleship
Our congregation welcomes people of all ages. Children are made welcome - there is a children's area at the rear of our chapel and we have a Sunday School ("Sunday Kids") which join with the congregation for the early part of the service before departing for their own room; and we provide taxis for those without access to transport.
We have a sound and loop system and hymns are projected onto a screen.
The church is registered for marriage - including same-sex marriage
We have recently formed a small music group to sing immediately before services comence with accompanyment on piano or guitar. Anyone is welcome to join in regardless of experience or ability.
The schoolroom is also available for hire.
As well as being open on a Sunday morning our doors are usually also open on a Tuesday afternoon between 2.00 and 4.00pm, when Knit and Natter sessions are held. We consider our outreach, being involved in our local community and welcoming to all, as being central to the life of our church family (for full detail visit the Regular Activities on this website)
Weekday activities are open to members of the local community as well as church members. Over the years our fund-raising activities have raised money for various local and national charities such as McMillian. With our support of such organisations as the Leprosy Mission we show our concern for the wider community and world issues.
We are very committed to sharing the Christian faith which also includes having fun. Our annual lunches on Pancake Tuesday are much enjoyed. Many pancakes are tossed and consumed!
